In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC that corporations and unions could spend unlimited amounts on political advertising. The decision opened the gates to the super PAC era — to the billions of dollars in annual political spending we live with now, the vast majority of it coming from corporations, special-interest groups, and a handful of billionaires.
Real citizens were nowhere in it. Real citizens were not united by it. The name was Orwellian: a ruling that systematically empowered concentrated wealth over ordinary people's voices was sold as a victory for citizens.
We are taking the name back.
Real Citizens United is what the original was claimed to be: actual citizens, actually united, exercising the political power the Court said money could buy. We don't have to wait for the decision to be overturned. We have to become the version of "Citizens United" the name was always supposed to describe.
At the level of what we actually need, most of us want the same things.
For generations, we have been sorted against each other along the surfaces — race, religion, region, class, political party, culture. Those differences are real, and worth respecting. They have also been used to keep us busy, while a small circle of concentrated wealth has gotten rich pretending our common ground did not exist.
Underneath the surfaces, we want the same things.
None of that is partisan. None of it is complicated. It is the shared human interior everyone knows exists.
People before profit. The planet before extraction. That is not an ideology imported from anywhere. It is what almost every human, in an honest moment, actually wants. We name it because saying it out loud is the first step toward organizing around it.
We work with politicians of any party who commit, in writing, to vote in line with that priority. We do not ask them to share our worldview. We ask them to keep their word. We treat politicians as individuals — because what determines whose money a given politician takes is rarely the party they belong to.
We propose to use the political system's own mechanisms — the PACs, the super PACs, the lobbying machinery, the disclosure rules, the campaign finance infrastructure — in the way they were always claimed to be available: for the broad participation of ordinary people in their own governance.
Water does not argue with rock. It does not negotiate the route. It does not seek permission. It finds every crack and follows every contour and — given time, and enough of itself — shapes whatever it encounters into a different form. It does this without violence. It does this without opposition. It does this by being so faithfully itself that the rock has no choice but to make room.
Real Citizens United is the same instinct, applied to American politics. We are the water. The system is the rock. We are not here to break it. We are here to become so numerous, so patient, so consistent that it cannot help but be reshaped by us.
